Heart Health Awareness Month

February is Heart Health Awareness Month.  Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.  The CDC reports that one in every three deaths is from heart disease.  Healthy choices, education, and regular follow ups from your physician plays an important role in the prevention of heart disease.

The following are steps to maintain heart health:

  1. Being physically active for at least 30 minutes a day; on most days of the week.
  2. Inquire with your physician if you should be taking an aspirin every day.
  3. Keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels normal, and getting effective treatment.  (seeing the physician on a regular basis)
  4. Stop smoking.
  5. Eating a heart-healthy diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in sodium and trans fat.

All of these may reduce the risk of developing heart disease.
